Mold Designer
The Position
Mold Designer: Specializing in creating detailed plans and designs for thermoplastic and thermoset molding applications. This role is crucial in the plastics industry, where precision and quality of molded products are paramount.
Job Description
Design and Development:
- Utilize CAD software (e.g., Pro Engineer/CREO/Solidworks) to create detailed mold designs, 3D models and 2D drawings of mold components and molds.
- Ensure mold designs meet the specified requirements, including dimensional accuracy, material selection, and manufacturability.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with engineering, production, and quality assurance teams to understand requirements and constraints.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders to discuss design changes and updates when requested by customers.
- Provide technical support during the mold manufacturing process.
- Provide training and development to junior designers.
Quality Assurance:
- Conduct thorough reviews and simulations of mold designs to identify potential issues.
- Implement design modifications to enhance mold performance and durability.
- Participate in mold trials and troubleshooting to resolve design-related issues.
- Monitor CTQ dimensions throughout the mold build process.
Documentation:
- Maintain detailed records of all design work, including revisions and updates.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and company policies in all designs.
- Create and update technical documentation and manuals for mold designs.
Continuous Improvement:
- Stay informed about industry trends, new technologies, and advancements in mold design.
- Suggest and implement improvements to internal design processes and practices.
- Engage in ongoing training and development to enhance skills and knowledge.

Job Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field preferred.
Skills & Relevant Work Experience
Experience:
- 3+ of experience in mold design, with a strong portfolio of successful projects.
- Experience in specific plastic molding related industries (e.g., automotive, electrical, medical, plastics) preferred.
- Experience with both thermoplastic and thermoset mold designs preferred.
Skills:
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CREO, etc.).
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and plastic molding related tooling.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Working Conditions:
- May require occasional travel to meet with clients or visit production sites.
- Typically sits, grasps items, and performs keyboarding for regular operation of a computer.
- Stand, walk, bend, reach or otherwise move about regularly.
- Life, move, or otherwise transfer items up to 40lbs occasionally.
- Exposure to typical manufacturing and office environment.
- Exposure to extremes of heat in manufacturing area.
