Role Overview
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating a variety of heavy construction equipment used in concrete and civil construction projects, such as excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, loaders, and skid steers. The operator supports site preparation, excavation, grading, backfilling, and material movement to facilitate concrete pours and related work. This position plays a critical role in maintaining safe, productive, and high-quality job site operations.
Primary Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, skid steers, and backhoes to complete tasks related to excavation, site prep, and concrete construction.
- Perform daily equipment inspections and basic preventive maintenance to ensure safe operation.
- Work closely with site supervisors, laborers, and carpenters to coordinate equipment movements and needs.
- Assist in site grading, trenching, footing excavation, backfilling, and compaction operations.
- Load and unload materials, debris, and other construction items.
- Follow grade stakes and interpret site plans, blueprints, and project layout.
- Maintain accurate logs and equipment use records.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, including use of PPE and awareness of surroundings.
- Identify and report mechanical issues or safety hazards to supervisors immediately.
- Support concrete crews with equipment tasks as needed, including pouring assistance, hoisting, and transporting materials.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations governing equipment operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience operating heavy equipment in a construction environment, preferably concrete or civil.
- Proficiency in safely operating multiple types of heavy machinery.
- Strong understanding of equipment capabilities, load limits, and terrain awareness.
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL (Class A or B) preferred.
- OSHA 10 certification preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and grade stakes.
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
