Electrical Design Engineer

CM Shredders, L.L.C. Sarasota, FL (Onsite) Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Electrical Design Engineer plays a critical role in leading projects related to electrical and controls engineering for industrial shredders and recycling systems. This position involves designing and developing control systems that align with CM's performance specifications, regulatory standards, and manufacturing needs. Through innovative solutions and rigorous standards, the Electrical Design Engineer will support CM’s goal of maintaining a competitive edge across various market segments.

Essential Job Responsibilities: 

Strategy

  • Execute engineering goals and objectives as outlined by the Engineering Team Lead and Director of Engineering.
  • Contribute to product strategy and long-term product development planning.
  • Implement controls engineering standards in alignment with CM’s standards.
  • Coordinate with various CM departments to ensure accurate interpretation of schematics, bills of materials, and control logic.
  • Alert the Engineering Team Lead and Director of Engineering regarding any potential risks to achieving project objectives.

Product Development & Management

  • Assist in developing feasible project plans, budgets, and schedules that meet business goals.
  • Provide technical and product support to Service, Quality Assurance, Production, and Purchasing teams.
  • Adhere to CM and Shred-Tech Project Management Procedures.
  • Oversee all technical aspects of project management for control systems, including panel programming and system controls.
  • Perform and/or supervise testing to validate equipment performance against expectations.
  • Ensure all control system aspects (scope, function, budget, cost, schedule, timing) are met for assigned projects.
  • Tackle assignments requiring a thorough understanding of electrical engineering principles.
  • Develop and maintain control engineering procedures and processes, measuring their performance regularly.
  • Prepare engineering documentation including schematics, drawings, BOMs, ECNs, and sections of product manuals related to electrical and control systems.

Team Support

  • Supervise assigned projects to ensure objectives are met efficiently.
  • Provide technical support to Sales, Service, Quality Assurance, and Production teams as needed.
  • Contribute to engineering projects across various departments.

Financial

  • Identify and lead cost improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Team Lead and Director of Engineering to develop departmental budgets and staffing plans.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:       

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls, Robotics, Automation, or Mechatronics; or equivalent Engineering Technologist Diploma.

Experience:      

  • 5-10 years of experience in electrical engineering, with skills in: Programming and development of Siemens, Allen Bradley, and Schneider PLCs and HMIs.
  • Troubleshooting and solving issues with logic and drive programs.
  • Electrical system design, including control panel design, BOM preparation, panel testing, and equipment manual completion.
  • Familiarity with North American and European Electrical Codes.
  • AC/DC drive system design, and proficiency in configuring and commissioning variable frequency drives.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Proficient in 2D drafting software (AutoCAD, DraftSight) and electrical-based software (SolidWorks Electrical, AutoCAD Electrical is a plus).
  • Knowledge of CSA requirements is essential; CE, UL, and NEC knowledge is beneficial.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for electrical systems, particularly with drives and motors.
  • Skilled in PLC/HMI programming for Schneider, Allen-Bradley, and Siemens.
  • Capable of designing, building, and commissioning control systems, including electrical panels, PLC programs, HMI programs, and integrating third-party devices.
  • Ability to independently specify and source project components.
  • Proficiency in project testing, certification, and preparing instruction manuals.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and self-motivation.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Teams, and MRP systems like Epicor (an asset).
  • Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with Sales, Service, Purchasing, and Manufacturing teams.
