Davis Wire-Kent is a manufacturing mill located off 80th Ave S in Kent, WA, specializing in a producing a wide range of wire products. We have a 24-hour operation working over three shifts. This facility does operate with a collective bargaining agreement with Teamsters Local Union. Normal non-union personnel work a typical Monday through Friday schedule, although some overtime is required depending upon position. Summary: Directs and coordinates activities of shipping personnel concerned with documentation and routing of outgoing freight and verification and reshipment of incoming freight by performing the following duties personally.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Coordinates with manufacturing, sales, customer services and production scheduling in scheduling, routing and shipping finished goods by common carriers.




  • Schedules common carriers and rail shipments and directs common carrier personnel while they are on company property to ensure compliance with safety rules and regulations.




  • Audits all prepaid freight bills.




  • Reviews and negotiates rates with common carriers.




  • Inspects in-coming/out-going finished goods for quality, quantity and condition.




  • Records truck rates and charges on all customer orders.




  • Maintains knowledge of freight rates for intrastate/interstate iron and steel.




  • Maintains and periodically reviews routing policy.




  • Assist in taking physical inventories, as required.




  • Maintains finished product storage areas and advises sales of any surplus or slow moving materials.




  • Develops departmental cost improvement programs.




  • Reviews documents to ensure that assigned classifications and tariffs are in accordance with mode of transportation and destination of shipment.




  • Investigates shipper or consignee complaints regarding lost or damaged merchandise or shortages in shipment to determine responsibility.




  • Directs preparation of claims against carrier responsible and corresponds with shipper or consignee to effect settlement.

Education/Experience:

Bachelors degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Math Ability:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises "4 to 6" employees in the Shipping Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
