Job Description

The Materials Manager will provide leadership to the materials organization, consisting of production scheduling, material handlers, warehouse, and shipping/receiving employees to ensure material availability to meet customer expectations and appropriate inventory levels to manufacture products and optimize business results.


Responsible for product and material control for the plant.

Ensures that production activities are scheduled in a manner, which will make efficient operations possible, and at the same time, assure the fulfillment of customer delivery requirements.

Directs and coordinates the plant SIOP (Sales, Inventory, and Operations Planning) process, Master Scheduling, Production Planning, Physical Inventory, Cycle counting, Shipping/Receiving, Warehouse and Inventory control processes

Reduce non-value-added activities driving productivity and establishing materials flow through the end-to-end process.

Maintain accurate inventories and inventory control using techniques such as: min-max and cycle count processes.

Manage and enforce material flow and traceability in warehousing environment using scanning technology and visual management.

Establish performance standards and objectives for the Materials organization that supports overall inventory objectives.

Gain consensus for the proper balance in capacity planning and materials scheduling from associated functional areas.

Develop and encourage customer centric philosophy.

Promote organizational culture of continuous improvement by championing the use of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles, including Plan For Every Part (PFEP), pull systems, Kanban, etc.

Responsible for establishing internal logistics plan and material delivery system/routes.

Responsible to maintain and coordinate activities to ensure vital plant metrics, including but not limited to; Customer On-time delivery, Backlog, Days on Hand inventory, and past due Work Orders/Schedules.

Monitor the results of changes to the inventory plan/forecast and recommend modifications. Plan for prevention of excess & obsolete inventory and back orders.

Effectively develop and utilize all people resources through talent management & talent development processes.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.

Freely move around the plant and warehouse to accomplish supervisory responsibilities and observe manufacturing processes. Computer use (sitting, typing, viewing screen).

Competent keyboarding. Proficient in MS Office. Microsoft AX or equivalent mainframe.

Bachelor’s degree required with equivalent additional technical related experience. MBA preferred.

5-10 years’ experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment with continually increasing levels of responsibility and previous experience in a materials leadership role.
Lean-Six Sigma methodology and tools training is required; (Black Belt or Green Belt certification is preferred); must be able to demonstrate the use of process improvement techniques & tools in a variety of successful manufacturing or materials organization.
Direct experience in supervising people and leading teams is required.
