Job Description

Reporting to the VP of Finance, the Assistant Controller will be considered a leader in Stenograph’s finance team and will collaborate with VP of Finance to aid in the direct financial decisions and overall strategy of the company. S/he will help craft and enforce policies while being a driver of the department’s accounting, financial reporting, analysis, and compliance. S/he will play a key role in financial administration, business planning, and budgeting. The Assistant Controller will be responsible for ongoing advancement of the Accounting and Finance function including development of the core team. S/he will also play a key role in collaborating across functional areas and departments to foster a Strategic Business Partner culture.

Primary responsibilities include:

Financial Reporting and General Ledger

  • Lead efforts in timely and accurate completion of month-end close process; including journal entries, balance sheet reconciliation, variance to budget and prior month analysis, and financial reporting to corporate.  Streamline the process where possible.
  • Analyze accounts, oversee balance sheet reconciliation process, make recommendations and adjustments
  • Generate and review periodic financial statements and reports, both internal and external.
  • Oversee the preparation and compilation of all financial reporting materials to ensure they are in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Prepare and communicate monthly and annual financial statements and ad-hoc reporting to Platform, management team and, end users.

Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Key contributor to budgeting, and the implementation of budgets, including actively monitoring and analyzing to present operational metrics both internally and externally.
  • Investigate and analyze trends and variances comparing actual results to forecasts, budget, and prior years.
  • Provide written explanations of variances with support as needed.
  • Assist with the creation of dashboard reports/metrics for the management team / functional areas
  • Prepare periodic departmental spending reports. Review with appropriate department managers. Work with them in cost reduction efforts and align financial management with short and long-term planning and projections.
  • Assist with establishing and monitoring systems/processes to effectively and efficiently manage inventory levels, receivables and other working capital elements.
  • Interprets financial transactions and events to provide recommendations to the VP of Finance and Management team based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and cost/benefit analysis.

Compliance

  • Maintain/oversee testing of the control self-assessment (CSA) database for the business unit.
  • Interpret, analyze, and develop workflows ensuring compliance with internal and Corporate guidelines
  • Applies a working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations; verifies documents for completeness and compliance with government and private agencies
  • Assist with and oversee internal and external audit activities, including any action plans or remediation efforts.
  • Review all formal finance related procedures, processes, and administration, recommending improvements to the systems in place and managing the systems going forward.

Team Management

  • Develop and manage direct staff.
  • Engage other employees / departments —to facilitate cross-department collaboration that ensures that all financial solutions positively support Stenograph’s evolving strategy, operational delivery, and data collection needs.
  • Assist with attracting and developing financial team members.
  • Work closely with IT & ERP Systems Manager to ensure alignment.

Qualifications

The candidate will be an experienced accounting and finance professional with at least 5 years of experience including Financial Reporting, Planning and Analysis, process improvement and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership. S/he will ideally have experience managing finance (accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting).

The Assistant Controller will have the following experience and attributes:

Education

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting / Finance
  • CPA/CMA certification preferred and/or MBA a plus.

Skills & Relevant Work Experience

  • Must have at least 5 years of hands on accounting and financial reporting experience, preferably in a manufacturing / technology environment.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting and financial processes including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), general ledger, managerial / cost accounting, financial closure, forecasting, budgeting and reporting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with strong oral and written skills.
  • Problem solving and innovative skills, including ability to analyze, interpret, understand and successfully resolve issues within the best interests of the company.
  • Attention to detail; well-developed data collection, financial analysis and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proficient use of ERP systems and Microsoft Office Suite, (Microsoft Navision/Dynamics and Office365 a plus)
  • Ability to examine, develop, reengineer, and recommend financial policies and procedures.
  • High degree of diplomacy and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of the company, platform and parent organization.
  • Experience with Microsoft PowerBI or other data mining/analytics/visualization software a plus
  • Flexible and a self-starter; able to multi-task while prioritizing tasks effectively
  • Willingness and ability to work additional hours as needed.
