The Position

Toolmakers craft precision tools that are used to cut, shape, and form metal and other materials. They also produce jigs and fixturesdevices that hold metal while it is bored, stamped, or drilledand gauges and other measuring devices. Designs are entered into computer programs that produce blueprints for the required tools and dies. Tool makers should be trained to both operate CNC and EDM machines and write CNC and EDM programs and thus is required do either task.

Die makers construct metal forms, called dies, that are used to shape metal in stamping and forging operations. They also make metal molds for molding plastics and composite materials.

Job Description

Primary Responsibilities

  • Read blueprints, sketches, specifications, or CAD and CAM files for making tools and dies

  • Compute and verify dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of workpieces

  • Set up, operate, and disassemble conventional, manual, EDM and CNC machine tools

  • File, grind, and adjust parts so that they fit together properly

  • Test completed tools and dies to ensure that they meet specifications

  • Troubleshoot and fix tooling issues

  • Smooth and polish the surfaces of tools and dies

  • Plan, Layout and Perform bench heat treating and machine operations

  • Construct, alter or alter a variety of molds, tools, dies and fixtures

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

Skills Relevant Work Experience

  • 2 3 years of experience machining

  • Thorough knowledge of tool and mold making practices

  • Ability to use manual, EDM, and CNC processes

  • Ability to interpret blue prints and schematics

  • Ability to run variety of tool room machinery

  • Ability to use micrometer, calipers and pin gauges

  • Experience with advanced shop mathematics, including trigonometry and geometry, charts, table and handbook formulas

  • Organized and able to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines

  • Experience working in an environment of continual improvements

  • Good communication skills including the ability to receive and give oral and written instructions

  • Demonstrated problem solving abilities

  • Safety conscious

  • Attention to detail

This is a 1st shift position with hours 6am -2:30pm
