Job Title: Steel Plant Manager

Department: Steel

Reports To: General Manager


Directs and coordinates all activities of the Steel Department. Works closely with support departments to facilitate efficient operations. Directs and coordinates Supervision of plant hourly and exempt employees in the Steel Department.

Job Requirements


  • Reviews production orders or schedules to ascertain product data such as types, quantities, and specifications of products and scheduled production.

  • Inspects machines and equipment to ensure specific operational performance and optimum utilization.

  • Directs Production Supervision and employees ensuring a safe, top quality and efficient product.

  • Ensure all employees follow the standard operational and working practices required.

  • Ensures proper sanitation procedures are followed.

  • Coaches all employees on safety and ensure safety policies are followed.

  • Has Coaching Responsibility for seeing that products are produced in the most cost effective manner possible.

  • Control absenteeism by supervisory emphasis and counseling as necessary.

  • Minimize waste, reject and substandard product.

  • Insure all record keeping is accomplished correctly so production records are accurate.

  • Work with maintenance to keep equipment in best mechanical operating condition.

  • Ensures that safety activities by production employees are accomplished as outlined in the plants safety program.

  • Ensure employees are properly trained regarding job responsibilities.

  • Maintain good morale and positive attitudes among all employees.

  • Counsels hourly associates and administers disciplinary action as necessary.

  • Other Duties as assigned


  • Direct oversight of all steel production operations, establishing priorities and sequences for manufacturing products, including supervision of steel plant supervisors and hourly production staff.

  • Carries out management responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.

  • Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, administering recognition and/or discipline, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

  • Generates and reviews production and operating reports and resolves operational, manufacturing /warehouse and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Significant experience in a leadership role in a fast paced manufacturing environment is required. Must have proven ability to lead, make decisions, facilitate change, and manage conflict. Ability to align performance for success and demonstrate strong people skills. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


Bachelors degree (B. A.) from four-year College or university and/or 10 years related experience in a manufacturing industry or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to lead and speak effectively with employees and management. Competency in PC based Office programs is required.


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages.


Ability to resolve complex problems with an innovative and persistent approach. Ability to deal with a variety of variables and in situations where only limited experience may exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Standing and walking the majority of the day, moving freely around all areas of the plant.
